Lovecraftiana publishes “Notice”
My short story "Notice", a fast-paced epistolary tale of madness and obsession, has been published in Lovecraftiana Magazine. Building off of elements in Lovecraft's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", it follows an office worked on his search to uncover the secret at the heart of a converted factory building, and the mystery behind his lost love’s disappearance. It might just be my most Lovecraftian story yet, and I’m excited to be able to share it with the world.
Here’s an excerpt:
I couldn’t have known it then. Not really. On paper, this old garment factory seemed like the answer to all our prayers. High ceilings. Room to grow. A wide open loft space that would put any of the other tech companies to shame, and right in the heart of the old district with its old brickwork everywhere and a hipster coffee shop on every corner. Cheap, too. People didn’t think I paid much attention to such things, but I talk to the accountants, or at least, I used to. All of them said we were getting it for a steal, even with the renovations and the brand-new heating system.
It’s a wonder that that never gave anyone pause.
Because old buildings have a kind of memory, don’t they? They stand silent and watch as time marches on around them, and all that time they live and they breathe and they remember it all and not even fire can touch that memory because it sinks down deep into the very bricks. You can put in all the wiring and drywall and fresh coats of paint, but none of that really changes them. They keep hold of their nature, the way reptiles in cages keep hold of their nature, and everything that echoes inside them stays.
“Notice” appears in the Lammas Eve issue of the magazine, and is currently available in print and ebook from Amazon.
